Immigration is for the future. Immigration has a long history. Immigration happens today.

In the past few years international mobility increased enormously. This trend has also had an impact on immigration to Germany. However, each group of migrants must be looked at separately.

While the number of foreigners joining their families and of ethnic German resettlers has dropped, there has been an increase in the number of qualified workers migrating to Germany. The number of residence permits granted to persons with academic qualifications as well as to senior employees and experts has also further increased.

The Federal Government aims at making Germany more attractive for highly qualified persons and reducing bureaucratic obstacles to the immigration of qualified workers.

The integration of migrants already living or newly migrating to Germany continues to be a top priority. In this context, it is necessary to take the different circumstances and specific characteristics of the various groups of migrants - ranging from the first generation of migrants to the children born to foreigners in Germany - into account. With more than 15 million persons with an immigrant background living in Germany, integration is a key responsibility to ensure social cohesion in our country.
